Description
This is a very nice copy of Classic Records reissue of Ernest Ansermet and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden “The Royal Ballet Gala Performance” on nine single-sided 200g 45 rpm records. The 45 RPM set is a complete recording LSC-6065-45. The set is a very enjoyable album of excerpts from famous ballets and has long been on the TAS list. When I first bought this new, the records were cleaned with a VPI record cleaner and treated with LAST record preservative. More recently it was recleaned with Audio Intelligent Fluids on a VPI cleaner and on an Audio Desk ultra sonic record cleaner. It has also been demagnetized with a Furutech DeMag.
Side 1 has 5 faint ticks and 2 light ticks spread over the side but is mostly very quiet. There are no scuffs or scratches.
Side 2 has some light surface noise on the lead-in groove with 2 additional ticks near the beginning and 2 others over the side is mostly very quiet. There are no scuffs or scratches.
Side 3 has ½” light diagonal scratch on the first track which doesn’t seem to sound. There are 3 light ticks near the beginning of side 3, track 1 with 1 additional light tick and a 1 second louder tick near the end of the track. There are 3 additional light ticks over the remainder of the side but it mostly plays quietly.
Side 4 has no scuffs or scratches and with the exception of 2 faint ticks plays very quietly.
Side 5 has no scuffs or scratches and other than 2 very faint ticks, plays very quietly.
Side 6 has no scuffs or scratches but has some low level surface noise and light ticks over the first 30 seconds or so with an occasional light tick after that but is mostly very quiet.
Side 7 has no scuffs or scratches and plays very quietly with only 2 light ticks notices.
Sides 8 and 9 have no scuffs or scratches and play mostly very quietly with only 3 and 2 ticks respectively noted.
I have only played the records a few times on various VPI tables I have owned (HW-19 MKIV, TNT 3.5, and Classic 4) using either Lyra or Benz Mico Ruby cartridges. The sound is naturally open and detailed. The records are housed in a large black box with gold lettering with the individual records in the box. The box is in “like new” condition. The first two records are housed in the original gatefold jacket while records 3 through 9 are in plain white jackes with the stickers on the cover. There are two seam splits along the two top edges of the gatefold jacket but the jacket is otherwise fine. Unlike the 33 RPM version of these records, Classic Records did NOT include the booklet in the gatefold jacket. Another flaw with this set as issued by Classic is that the label for side 6 incorrectly states it is selections from “The Nutcracker” while it really contains the excerpts from “Swan Lake” as listed on the back of the gatefold jacket. Only side A of each LP is pressed. Side B is blank. Multiple records can be combined in an order to save shipping costs.
