From my own collection that I'm down-sizing . . .
A really rare couple of live vinyl albums by The Runaways that I picked up in 1977. I got them from a guy who had decided to make two albums into a double album by getting two plain white card sleeves and then pasting pictures on three sides with the front composed of cutouts from info sheets that came with the LPs.
You can hear the albums on Youtube if you search Runaways and Starwood or Santa Monica. There you'll also see accompanying the audio is a copy of the original info sheet that came with each album, and if you look at the front of this album you can see where the cutouts for track listings etc. came from.
The other three sides have b/w pictures that I recognise as having come from the UK music press as I've got most of them in my own collection attached to original articles from NME, Sounds and Melody Maker. Everything stuck onto the sleeves is in remarkably good condition because I've kept it in an outer plastic sleeve for all these years. There used to be a piece of sellotape holding the two sleeves together into a gatefold album, but that has come off neatly at some point so the two white sleeves are now separate but could be pasted together again if you wanted.
Let's start with what is listed here as Record Two but is chronologically the earliest. It is a live album recorded at the Starwood in LA in September 1976 and issued on 'dog n cat records'. This was just before the band came to Europe (I saw them in the UK in early October) and it's a fantastic recording which I think has been re-released again on vinyl in the USA recently. The balance of sound is great and the audience are only audible between tracks so it may have been recorded by the mixing desk. The vinyl looks very good with just a handful of slight surface rubs and basically plays like new as I copied it into tape at the time and listened to that instead.
Record One comes from Santa Monica Civic in April 1977 and was titled "....No Olds Allowed". I think the original album must have come with white labels as it looks as though the labels here have been hand-written. Again the vinyl plays fine but this time the recording sounds like it was made in the audience as it is a bit muffled in places. Also it has evidence of some residue (spilt drink!) that was splashed on before I got it and is faintly audible in places but it would clean off easily if you've got the means to do that. So again this is a great original artifact and very listenable, and I'm not sure this one has ever been re-released since.
So there you have it. A piece of history. Two mega rare original live LPs from forty years ago that are in good condition having been stored safely on my shelves ever since.
