Must be a (perfect) looking and sounding exact 2nd press from the German Metronome label comes the legendary SMOKE ~ It's Smoke Time, a classic British heavy Psych-Pop nugget that was released ONLY in Germany on the Metronome label. Of course the Lp is known for the all-time psychedelic groove MY FRIEND JACK (eats Sugarlumps) which was sadly banned for the drug reference...has the irresistable infectious melody containing knife-scraping guitar effects...The 12 tunes are stunningly solid throughout, a classic set of mod psych-pop spiked grooves and no wonder the Lp fetches $400+ in playable condition... ides "My Friend Jack," other highlights of the Smoke's only album (all but one of whose tracks were group originals) include the beautiful mid-tempo ballad "Waterfall" and the bee-humming guitars and lilting backup vocals on "You Can't Trippy lyrics and arrangements over an upbeat mod/psychedelic sound, and memorable melodies; its really surprising and sad that their music is not better remembered today, or that they did not receive more encouragement at the time they recorded. And there's no doubt this is a true classic of its time: "High in a Room"; "My Friend Jack"("Oh, what beautiful things he sees!"); "It's Just Your Way Of Lovin'"; "Waterfall" - all feature lyrics that transport you on your own trip to the swingin' London of '66-67. The music is strong, and far superior to mod contemporaries like The Creation or The Small Faces; these tracks feature sweet pop melodies that grow on you with each listen coupled with aggressive, edgy and sometimes crunchy guitars over an excellent rhythm section.
