~~ Prehistoric Sounds is the third album released by the Australian punk rock group The Saints in October 1978. This was the final album to feature founding lead guitarist, Ed Kuepper, who left the band shortly after its release.
Like most people into the Saints, I got into them through '(I'm) Stranded', their killer debut of raw, ripping garage punk. Even that album indicated that the Saints weren't just into the three chord formula through songs such as "Messing with the Kid" and "Story of Love", both being ballads. Their second album introduced horns and acoustic guitars but for the most part was still driven by short songs consisting of distorted power chords. So, with their third album, the same exact line up which made their 2nd album, 'Eternally Yours', is back (yep that's Algy Ward from the Damned playing bass!). But this sounds nothing like the band on their first or second album. Instead the group has mostly gone acoustic, with bits of electric guitars filling out the sound with a few guitar leads. Horns also dominate this sound and the group has predominantly gone soul. The exception being a straight rockabilly tune, a brooding little rocker with a hypnotic bassline and a happy go lucky pop song called called "Take This Heart of Mine." This album is where the Saints wanted to completely break from the punk tag, which they had accidentally fallen into in the first place and weren't exactly happy with. The songwriting on 'Prehistoric Sounds' is brilliant and hooky. How do you describe good songs? They have strong melodies and you want to listen to them over and over again. The lyrics are pretty bleak and mopy save a for a couple of happy tunes. Eleven of the songs are originals and two are covers, both soul classics, and the whole thing is great! Guitarist Ed Kuepper is considered a genius in his own country and singer Chris Bailey has an excellent voice for this material
