The Smiths - 'Debut Album' First Run White Label LP - 1984

Catalogue no. ROUGH 61 - Rough Trade

The first LP by The Smiths was promoted in the UK at the time of its release by white label copies of the record which were sent out to radio stations.

In a Record Collector article of 2005, some of these white label LPs were sent out in plain sleeves with photocopies of the record labels attached.

This is not one of those copies, but, even better, one of the first run copies which were sent out with a special two-sided press release featuring a copy of the album artwork on one side, and band information with tour dates on the other.

This is not a photocopy but the original press release and has been preserved in terrific condition.

What is more, the white label LP is identified as one of the very first run by the matrix etchings "Rough 61 A1" and "Rough 61 B1" on either side   The later pressings had "Rough 61 A3" and "Rough 61 B3" etched on it.

Examples of this promotional vinyl which remain in good condition have become extremely collectable and difficult to get hold of in recent times, let alone those which are first run pressings with the press release - you may not see another on sale for quite some time, if at all.

The vinyl and labels are in near mint condition, appearing to have been played just once or twice and remarkably well preserved.

The vinyl has practically no surface marks and retains its glossy sheen. The delicate press release on thin paper is in strong excellent condition, having been neatly folded just once across its centre as it would very likely have been sent out.

There are no marks, writing or damage and it has survived well; though it is clearly 25 years old and not a newer reprint or photocopy. The outer sleeve is excellent condition with a slight crease bottom right, and would be easy to replace being the standard album sleeve.

although i offer free uk postage, due to the value and rarity of this item i can offer recorded / signed for  postage upon request for postage prices
