Description

The Smiths - 'Ask' Australian 12"

Catalogue no. RTANZ 12019 - Rough Trade

This extremely scarce version of the classic Smiths track was released in Australia as a track from 'The World Won't Listen' in 1987 with a unique sleeve and a different tracklisting, having Shoplifters Of The World Unite and Cemetry Gates on the B-side. Owing to its unique artwork (being one of the very few Smiths releases to feature Morrissey on the cover), this record has become highly sought-after by collectors; with copies in suitable condition having risen sharply in value in recent years. This version is even rarer than the standard 12" release, since it is a promotional only version that was sent to radio stations (though this one appears to have never been played). The sleeve bears a 'promotion only' gold stamp on the reverse in respect of this (see photo).

To gauge an idea of its value, the standard 12" release made the Record Collector Smiths Top 100 rarities list at number 22 in 1992 (see photo) when it was valued at 30.00, and again more recently (when the list was reviewed) and it came in at number 29 at a value of 50.00 (see photo). Since then the value of the record has exploded as collectors have realised just how rare copies actually are. Two separate examples of this 12" sold recently here on ebay at over 100 pounds each, (see here and here). It may be borne in mind that this is a promotional copy of the same 12" and is therefore even rarer than the above.

This is a great example of this rare release: the vinyl is in immaculate mint condition, being almost certainly unplayed and having lost none of its shine and lustre. The sleeve is in excellent condition, and largely mint but for the beginnings of a seam split of just over an inch on the front left edge and lesser signs of the above on the top and bottom edges. There is just the mildest signs of an impression due to the circular disc of the vinyl inside, but no other significant signs of wear; having been stored in a protective plastic sleeve. Please see the accompanying pictures; note that the ID lettering is just on the pictures and not the item itself.

All my auctions start at 1P and have NO RESERVE. They are all 100% genuine, original versions. Some are in mint/new condition and some are used; all will go to the highest bidder.
