Description
The Smiths Girlfriend In A Coma 12" single promo white-label test-pressing. Rough Trade RTT197.
B/W Work Is A Four-Letter Word and I Keep Mine Hidden.
The vinyl is in excellent condition and features the iconic hand-etched Morrissey quotes: EVERYBODY IS A FLASHER AT HEART AND NEVER MORE SHALL BE SO. These quotes are sign of genuine EMI-pressed UK test pressings. See pic for close-up.
The white center label has writing on to identify the record by myself.
I bought from a record fair circa 1992, it came with a 12x24 poster promoting the release but I stuck it on my wall and then lost it years ago. At the time, this record was the only way for me to get the two bonus tracks as i couldn't find the official commercial 12" release.
A white-label promo or test-pressing is an advance copy of the release sent to DJs/radio stations and the press before the official commercial single is out in shops. They are always white and blank and as a result DJs or factory technicians will often write on the labels to identify them as I had done here. A test-pressing is where the factory makes a prototype of the single to test for audio defects and so is for internal use only and not for commercial sale. Thus only 25 copies or so were made.
This single was released in August 1987, just weeks after Johnny Marr left the group, effectively ending the band.
