Description

The experience of buying records on Ebay is ruined if, when they arrive, you discover that they are either not in the condition stated or have been damaged in the post! For this reason I describe all my items in detail, and only post using strong sturdy packaging in a 'box' mailer with the record outside the sleeve to avoid seam-splitting. They are also from a non-smoking and pet-free home.
I accept returns and offer a full refund if you are not happy with your purchase.

The Smiths - 'Ask' Dutch Mispressed Sleeve 7" - 1986

Catalogue no. MD 5282 / RT 194 - Megadisc / Rough Trade Records

This is a very interesting and quirky item which has not been widely known about in the Smiths collecting community, and is a rare version of the 1986 Dutch pressing of the 7" single 'Ask'. The standard Dutch pressing in 1986 had a variant of the UK sleeve artwork, but with the image of Yootha Joyce printed in a lighter shade of yellow, almost grey, compared to the more familar UK version. This standard version of the Dutch 7" is shown in Photos 3 and 4 and will be included in the auction for comparison. It appears that a few copies, of unknown number, were printed with an almost bizarre deep shade of orange/brown being used for the image of Yootha Joyce; this version is shown in Photos 1 and 2, which do not fully do justice to how deep the shade of orange actually is! It appears that this rare version may have been a rejected first version of the sleeve, since the deeper shade is also used on the reverse of the sleeve (see Photo 2) and is printed perfectly rather than having the appearance of an accident. The record inside the sleeve is identical to that found in the more common standard sleeve. This 'mispressed' sleeve is striking in appearance and makes for a fascinating contrast to the more familar colour scheme. By the scarce nature of the appearance of this version, with copies rarely ever coming up for sale, it would appear that only very limited numbers were pressed or released into circulation. This auction is an opportunity to get hold of this unusual pressing in very nice condition (see below) whose value is surely set to accumulate as its existence becomes more widely apparent amongst collectors.

The vinyl and labels are in strong excellent condition, with only the lightest of superficial surface marks visible if the record is held to the light. The thin paper outer sleeve is also in strong excellent condition, with no tears, seam-splits or significant creases anywhere; there is only some mild 'ringwear' and impression due to the record having been inside the sleeve, this is extremely rare given that the delicate sleeve is prone to splitting at the edges. There is some minor wear towards the 'mouth' of the sleeve, but no significant wear otherwise. This is a very nice example of this record which is extremely difficult to find. The standard dutch pressing, which is also included, is in similar strong excellent condition throughout, with no splitting or damage to the sleeve either. Please see the accompanying photos for more detail; note that the 'Ebay ID' lettering is just on the pictures and not on the item itself.

All my auctions start at 1P and have NO RESERVE. They are all 100% genuine, original versions. Some are in mint/new condition and some are used; all will go to the highest bidder. I offer a money-back guarantee if anything is described incorrectly. Postage and Packing is 2.30 in the UK for untracked and uninsured standard postage, this is subsidised by myself and the actual costs to me will usually be higher. Please do consider paying the extra 70p for tracked postage since there is nothing that can be done to find out what happened if the parcel is lost when standard postage is chosen. Shipping costs are greater for overseas buyers, but still subsidised and very good value; please check prices by using the options above or feel free to ask. Extra items are sent at no extra postage charge to the buyer (see below). I always take great care to package items well with strong mailing materials.

See my other auctions for related rare items here. If multiple auctions are won at the same time (within a week), I will charge only the postage cost for the heaviest item and pay the remainder myself. This is the case wherever you live. If you are planning to bid, but cannot be around at the end of the auction, I have found this free site to be useful; note that I am not affiliated with the site in any way!
