The Smiths - 'William It Was Really Nothing' Lilac Sleeve 12" - 1987 (Rare Second Issue)

This 12" is the rarer 1987 re-issue version of 'William It Was Really Nothing' which was pressed by Rough Trade. It was, apparently, necessary for legal reasons to change the green 'Man on Bed' sleeve of the original release, in response to which Morrissey wittily chose to use a still of Billie Whitelaw from the film "Charlie Bubbles" in a play on her name. The re-issue appears for sale far less frequently than the original pressings, indicating that fewer were produced and are in circulation. This record was listed in the Record Collector Smiths Top 100 rarities list at number 74. It is noteworthy, perhaps, that the etching on the run-out groove of the B-side differs from the original release and has a 'square symbol' scratched in place of the word 'square' on the original (as part of the phrase "romantic and square is hip and aware" which Johnny Marr allegedly wrote). This is one way to tell that the record has not been switched for the more common pressing inside the sleeve to replace a worn record or damaged vinyl.The vinyl and labels are in near mint condition, with no marks at all on the vinyl, and it appears almost certainly unplayed. The outer sleeve is also in near mint condition, with practically no signs of wear at all. All edges are sharp and there is just mild wear to one corner. There are no seam splits or creases visible. The original light blue inner sleeve is also present and intact. Please see the accompanying photos; note that the Ebay ID lettering is just on the pictures and not on the item itself.
