The experience of buying records on Ebay is ruined if, when they arrive, you discover that they are either not in the condition stated or have been damaged in the post! For this reason I describe all my items in detail, and only post using strong sturdy packaging in a 'box' mailer with the record outside the sleeve to avoid seam-splitting. They are also from a non-smoking and pet-free home.

The Smiths - Set of 7 UK Vinyl Album Releases: 1984 - 1988

Catalogue nos. ROUGH 61 - 126 - Rough Trade Records

This is a relatively rare chance to own all of the Smiths UK albums as original 1980s Rough Trade pressings; none of these are the recent re-issue versions. While the re-issues are undoubtedly nice to own, it will be these original pressings which will continue to rise in value and desirability amongst 'purists' and collectors. All seven UK vinyl releases are here (note that 'Louder Than Bombs' wasn't originally scheduled for a UK release and is not included here). All these are in their original picture sleeves with their original inner sleeves - and have been extremely well looked-after. They are all in collectable condition (see below for more details). There is no writing, tears or other damage on any of the sleeves, with no 'seam-splitting' and no scratches on any of the vinyl. Unlike some auctions of this type, this is not an excuse to sell sub-standard condition LPs by virtue of the fact that they are a set! It is not often that you see a full UK set of these LPs for sale in this type of condition. It is also interesting to note that the sound quality of these UK pressings has been said to be superior to that achieved on their US 'Sire' label counterparts, which is, ultimately, a matter for the listener to decide. Full details of the catalogue numbers and the condition of each are listed below.

The postage (particularly overseas, see details) represents good value compared to the extremely high price of buying them individually and paying the postal prices separately on each.

The condition in detail is as follows:

'The Smiths' (Debut) - Cat: ROUGH61: The vinyl and labels are in strong excellent condition, having been played but extremely well looked-after. There are practically no marks on the vinyl at all, other than the lightest of minor 'hairline' surface marks in a few places which only become visible if held to the light; otherwise the vinyl is highly glossy and well-preserved. The outer sleeve is also in strong excellent condition with no marks, writing or damage and also retaining its glossy appearance. There is no seam-splitting and the edges are sharp, with only very minor 'corner wear' in a few places. The inner sleeve is unmarked with, remarkably, no seam splits as the record has been stored safely in a plastic sleeve and outside of the paper sleeve.

'Hatful Of Hollow' - Cat: ROUGH76: This is the original-issue sleeve which has the gatefold sleeve and blue-bordered artwork. The vinyl is in strong excellent condition, there are no marks other than very faint 'hairline' surface marks if the vinyl is held to the light. The labels show evidence of the record having been played, but it has clearly been very well looked-after. Again, the record has been stored separately from the inner and outer sleeves and it shows. The impressive gatefold sleeve is also in strong excellent condition, with sharp spine and edges and only extremely mild corner and edge wear in just a few places. The inner sleeve is intact, glossy and mark-free, and has no splits at all.

'Meat Is Murder' - Cat: ROUGH81: The vinyl and labels are in strong excellent condition, with the record remaining highly glossy and having only very light surface marks in a few places. The sleeve is graded near mint, having been kept in terrific condition. There are no marks or splits and really no signs of wear at all; remaining glossy with sharp corners and edges which are also unworn. The inner sleeve is completely unmarked and undamaged, with no splits or noticeable wear. This is a superb example of this Rough Trade pressing.

'The Queen Is Dead' - Cat: ROUGH96: This highly-prized LP is in very nice condition. The vinyl and labels are in strong excellent condition, with only the occasional light surface mark and 'hairline' mark visible if the record is held to the light. The record has been played but well looked after. The thick inner sleeve retains its glossy appearance with no creases, marks or splits. The heavy gatefold outer sleeve is also an impressive strong excellent and looks terrific, with the front surface being smooth and unmarked and only some signs of mild to moderate wear visible on the corners. The spine is nice and strong and there are no signs of seam-splitting to the gatefold sleeve.

'The World Won't Listen' - Cat: ROUGH101: The vinyl and labels in this case are graded near mint, being highly glossy with practically no surface marks at all even when held to the light. The inner sleeve has no marks, splits or damage and is virtually as-new. The outer sleeve has only the very mildest beginning of 'corner wear' in one or two places and no marks or other signs of wear at all; it is also graded near mint and is one of the best Rough Trade copies I have seen.

'Strangeways Here We Come' - Cat: ROUGH106: The vinyl is in strong excellent condition, with just some faint superficial surface marks which become visible when held to the light but which do not affect play. The inner sleeve is unworn and undamaged, and the outer sleeve is also in strong excellent condition with only minor signs of wear. All edges are sharp and the flat surfaces are smooth and unmarked.

'Rank' - Cat: ROUGH126: The vinyl and labels are, again, in strong excellent condition; with nothing other than faint 'hairline' surface marks on the vinyl which has been played just once or twice. The thick silver inner sleeve has no signs of any marks or damage. The heavy outer gatefold sleeve is also in strong excellent condition, with no significant creases, visible marks or damage other than some very mild corner and edge wear in a few places.

The new owner is certain to be very happy with these essential Smiths releases on now-increasingly-rare vinyl.
