The Smiths - 'Sheila Take A Bow' Silver Label Test Press 7" - 1987

Test-run 7" pressings of later Smiths singles, from 'Shakespeare's Sister' onwards, are very scarce as white label 12" pressings were used for promotional purposes rather than the 7" format. Furthermore, this pressing of 'Sheila Take A Bow' from 1987 appears to be even rarer in that it constitutes a silver label pressing rather than the push-out paper label centre used for the regular 7" release. Silver label pressings of Smiths Rough Trade releases are practically unheard of, and it can reasonably be assumed that this pressing was more or less a one-off. It is clear that the same master as was used for the regular release was used in this test pressing, since the run-out groove etchings and matrix numbers "RT 196 A-1U-1-" and "Cook Bernard Matthews" match perfectly those seen on the first-run pressings of the standard 7" single in both form and position. This has been signed by Mike Joyce on the silver label area in faded black marker pen on the A-Side and the person from whom this was bought, who is an acknowledged authority on all things Smiths and Morrissey, informed me that this was obtained directly from Mike Joyce who previously owned it. I do not normally buy autographed items as it is impossible to determine their authenticity, but it is difficult to conceive that someone would put a fake signature on a record of this rarity. Furthermore I do not consider that the autograph would add significantly to the value of this item in any case, and I truly believe it to be genuine. Also written on the silver A-side label are the catalogue numbers "RT196 A & B1" in a green crayon in the same handwriting that Smith collectors will recognise as being on other pressings such as the 'Hand In Glove' 7" white label test pressing. When I bought the record several years ago it was my intention to keep it in my collection, but I have now fallen into the habit of selling off the bulk of this collection and so it is time to move it on for someone else to appreciate. If you decide to bid, you may rest assured that you are bidding on a true Smiths rarity.The vinyl and labels are in strong excellent condition, with nothing other than light 'hairline' surface marks on the glossy vinyl and the lightest of scuff marks on the run-out area. The silver labels have the occasional mark and 'line' as may be expected, but the signature and catalogue number writing can be distinguished very clearly. It comes in a black die-cut paper sleeve on which has been attached a white label with hand-written track names. Please see the accompanying photos; note that the Ebay ID lettering is just on the pictures and not the item itself.
