The Smiths - 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out' USA Promo 12'' - 1986

This very rare record was released back in 1986 as a promotional precursor to 'The Queen Is Dead' LP in the USA. Many of the USA promotional 12" Smiths releases were issued in plain white 'die-cut' sleeves, but this was one of the interesting exceptions and came in a picture sleeve which was, unusually, adapted from the standard 'Queen Is Dead' sleeve at the design stage. It is a lighter shade of green than was used for the 'Queen Is Dead' and you can see where the original album title was 'masked out' and replaced with the name and timing of the track on the cover prior to printing (see photo). The back of the sleeve is almost all white, and on the front, in the lower right hand corner, it states: "Promotional Copy. Not For Sale." The appearance of the sleeve makes for a strange and slightly 'quirky' variation if you are used to seeing the standard album sleeve. Since this quintessential Smiths track was released only in France as a single during the time that the band were together, this promotional pressing is particularly prized amongst collectors. In 1992 it was placed at Number 11 (above the 7" French release) in Record Collector's Smiths Top 100 collectables list, and then at Number 39 in the 2005 revision of the list as various scarce test pressings were introduced into the top placings. This is a genuine Smiths rarity which is not often seen for sale and is in very collectable condition (see below).The vinyl and labels are in strong excellent condition, with only light 'hairline' surface marks visible when the record is held to the light. The labels are unmarked and the record appears to be unplayed. The outer picture sleeve is in excellent condition, with just some mild wear to the top edge and corners in places. There are no marks, rips, tears, writing or any damage anywhere to the sleeve and it is in a highly collectable condition. On the upper region of the front and reverse there is just the beginning of mild 'ringwear' from the impression of the vinyl, which has been stored outside of the sleeve since being in my possession to prevent any further wear. There are no 'seam splits' to any of the edges. Please see the accompanying photos for more detail; note that the 'Ebay ID' lettering is just on the pictures and not on the item itself.
