DESCRIPTION: This is a very rare copy of the 2nd pressing (Green Cover) of The Snakes "I Won't Love You 'Til You're More Like Me" LP. Dischord Records, Discard No. 18, Washington, DC, 1986. Very few of these records were pressed, and it has been out of print since 1986 or '87.
The Snakes were mainly a studio project, consisting of Michael Hampton (State of Alert [S.O.A.], Faith, Embrace, Manifesto) and Simon Jacobsen (S.O.A.). Michael and Simon were graduates of Georgetown Day School along with Lyle Preslar (Minor Threat), Brian Baker (Minor Threat, Dag Nasty, Bad Religion) and Guy Picciotto (Rites of Spring, Fugazi). It seemed like half of the punks in the early DC scene came from Georgetown Day, and many of the others came from Woodrow Wilson Public High School. Michael and Simon played in State of Alert, which was Henry Rollins' first band, before he joined Black Flag. The Snakes were very important in the early years of the DC scene, for they injected much needed levity into an oftentimes overly-serious hardcore scene. Their songs were incredibly stupid (on purpose), and incredibly catchy. Very pop, with great harmonies and the stupidest lyrics imaginable, and very hard not to sing along to. I think their music has stood the test of time very well indeed. This record was so different from what we usually released that we changed the Dischord logo to Discard Records. I believe we (Dischord) only released one more studio project after this, which was the Egg Hunt single. Ian never really felt right about putting out bands that weren't "real", or played music that was considered too far afield, which is why I (Jeff Nelson, Minor Threat/Dischord) formed my smaller, side-label Adult Swim in 1989. When The Snakes recorded a second LP ("Happy"), I released it as a split release between Dischord and Adult Swim. ("Happy" CD contains both Snakes albums). If you like bright lime green, the cover might be reason enough to buy this record.
CONDITION / PROVENANCE: Record is in absolutely pristine condition. It has been kept in a plastic sleeve away from light and dust for the last 26 years. Record has never been played. This record is unconditionally guaranteed to be original, from 1986. It comes from my (Jeff Nelson - Minor Threat/Dischord Records) punk archives, which are being downsized after continuing to be described variously as "too big" and "insane" or containing "more than my potential kids or grandkids will ever want."
