Description
For your consideration is this vinyl copy of “Going All The Way” by The Squires, Atco #45-6442. Released in 1966, it didn’t sell well enough to warrant further releases, in Atco’s opinion. Fortunately, the archeologists at Mastercharge/BFD records unearthed it for inclusion on Pebbles Volume 1 in 1978 or 1979 for the rest of us to hear. Almost 60 years after being released it’s still one of the coolest singles ever.
This particular disc has been in my collection since the 1980s, back when we didn’t have the web to find such rarities. It is with some reluctance that I part with it, but Father Time remains undefeated, and nobody in my family really cares enough about these things to hang onto them forever. So let’s look at it.
The vinyl at first glance looks Near Mint, but upon closer inspection it looks more like VG+ to me. Audibly, there is surface noise in the trail-off. None that my 70-year-old ears detect during the song, however. I grade the vinyl at VG+.
The label is where the problem lies. Look at the A-side, the top half. You can see the color dropouts in the cornet and most of the letters in ATCO Records. On the B-side the problem isn’t as pronounced, with dropouts only on the cornet. Whatever caused it, it’s enough to lower the overall grade of the record, but luckily it doesn’t affect the play.
