From my perspective, the late 60’s will always be, first and foremost, the great age of psychedelia. And rock music represents an area of explosive creativity and inventiveness in composition that literally shattered many existing conventions. However, in fairness, it was also a golden age of pop and many derivative sub-genres such as pop-sike.

Tiffany Shade hailed from Ohio… and as critic and prophet Patrick (the Lama) Lundborg has astutely observed, there seems to have been an “Ohio River effect” with regard to late 60’s rock music. As the Lama  notes, the tri-state area of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky seemed to have spawned an “unexpected and statistically significant” number of outstanding practitioners of sike and pop-sike... a “regional outbreak of St. Anthony’s fire”… 

While incorporating various degrees of production orchestration was common within the pop-sike genre, it was something Tiffany Shade eschewed. Their sole eponymously monikered album is virtually free of orchestration, representing a clean and minimalist four-piece guitar, bass and percussion approach.

I hear this LP in two parts. Tracks like Come to Me Softly and A Very Grand Love have a lyte airy aura… not dissimilar to many West Coasters and certain British Invasion efforts but avoids dissolution into saccharin nausea so prevalent amongst Canadian popsters. To my ear, these numbers certainly reveal commercial potential had the group been managed and promoted differently and more effectively. In fact, I’m somewhat surprised a Tiffany Shade 45 featuring Would You Take My Mind Out for a Walk wasn't received with more enthusiasm.

I enjoy the aforementioned but per my own particular dementality, I favor cuts which play with a bit more edge in the lyrics. Trips like No Reality and A Quiet Revolution highlight my Tiffany Shade experience. However, by my hear, An Older Man is clearly the album’s gem track. Rocking a bit harder than other cuts, this number features just slightly edgy, gruff vocals backed by some nice fuzz.  It’s Tiffany Shade at their best and eliminates any doubt about this LP being most spinworthy. Ear this one if you get the chance !!
