Nielsen first gained notice as a member of two highly influential gospel groups, The Singing Speer Family and Jake Hess and the Imperials.
The Gospel Music Hall of Fame subsequently inducted Nielsen three times, including his later work with Hovie Lister and the Statesmen. The singer devoted his life to singing and spreading the good news of his Christian faith, calling Denmark home for much of the '90s and '00s.
However, it is his work and enduring friendship with the legendary Elvis Presley that many fans remember him for today. Beginning in 1973 as a member of Voice, one of Elvis' backing vocal groups onstage and in the studio, Nielsen remained with Elvis until the end.
Elvis would often ask Nielsen to take the spotlight and perform "Walk With Me," "Help Me," "Unchained Melody" (check out the ending), "Spanish Eyes," "O Sole Mio/It's Now Or Never," "Softly, As I Leave You," with the latter two performed as duets.
In fact, their performance of "Softly, As I Leave You" was nominated for a Grammy when released posthumously in 1978. You can also hear Nielsen all over Moody Blue, Elvis' final studio album.
