Description

From the same label as the elusive Gay Flamingoes LP w/ a slamming cover of Fela's "Black Man's Cry" comes this oddball piece of soul and funk flavor. The album is referred to as a "Lopi Beat" and while I know nothing of that term, the output is a refreshing mix of soul, reggae, & funk with an Island twist. On the back of the album next to the songs there are style descriptions such as Lopi Beat, Funky, Latin Soul, and Reggae. There are numerous stand-out tracks with various appeals. For the funksters out there heavy rec. on "My Sweet Lord" (sounds like Beginning Of The End meets Paul Robeson if you can picture it; real funky instrumentation, heavy congas and bass with snappy drumming and soul calls with faux religious-folk stylings), also hot is "He's My Brother" sweet soul with funky bass and crispy guitar, & "You" a sweeter latin-style cut with great horns and drumming. Also to be checked out are "I'm Gonna Keep It", "Sweetest Black Man", "Temptation", & "Soldiers Prayer". Great sound, intersting style, not to mention a gajillion loops and open phrases; do the do on Island rare-ocity! It probably doesn't hurt that this LP is virtually never seen even in the hands of well-versed dealers; no reserve!

Original Canadian Pressing: Caravan Records (Island Series)

Cover/Record Condition: EX-/VG+++ (plays excellent with very sparse surface noise between songs)

I have been collecting and selling in the new york and detroit areas for a number of years and have decided to unload a healthy chunk of my private collection. Check my future auctions for more funk, jazz, latin, disco, psych, breaks, and hip hop LP's.
