Insanely rare original Verve Records promotional copy of The Velvet Underground & Nico’s debut album. The commercial copies of this album appeared in the retail in March, 1967. The currently listed “Disc Jockey Records” yellow label promotional copy was pressed and shipped to radio stations at the end of 1966, three months before the official release date, and it’s for this particular reason we indicated this date in the listing’s title. The gatefold cover of this copy is the Uncensored 1st State version, which is also known as the “Torso” cover that shows the fully visible and unairbrushed torso of Eric Emerson projected on the wall behind the performing band on the back cover. The beautiful Near Mint (Practically Mint Minus) cover with the legendary Andy Warhol’s concept art sticker in the form of a banana being in an absolute virgin state and unpeeled underneath the original factory shrink wrap. This promotional copy was pressed in Bloomingfield, New Jersey and contains the East Coast yellow / black promotional version “DISC JOCKEY RECORDS NOT FOR SALE” labels with the T-shape Verve Records logo, “V-5008” Mono catalog number and the misprint indicating the timing for “I’ll Be Your Mirror” as 2:01 as oppose to the correct one 2:10. The MGM Records “Made in U.S.A.” 1.25” pressing ring labels also contain the credits reading “Prod. by Andy Warhol” on both sides. Dedicated Mono mix pre-release promotional MGM Records, Bloomingfield, New Jersey plant pressing with the block-looking “S” symbol engraved in the runout groove and 1 / 1 mother stampers with the full 1stmatrix numbers being as follows: Side 1 - V5008 SIDE1 MG558REV Block-looking "S" Symbol; Side 2 - V5008 SIDE2 MG559 11 "8" Symbol. This promotional copy comes with the original "The Jazz of America is on Verve / The Wit of America is on Verve" paper inner sleeve.

The outstanding cover of this East Coast yellow label promotional copy is in Near Mint condition and would be graded as Mint Minus if it weren't due to the light push-in on the top and bottom left corners. All of the edges and spine are rigid and fully intact. The original factory shrink wrap doesn't have any splits or tears. Truly stunning example. The vinyl is graded visually as Very Good for Side 1 and somewhere between Strong Very Good and Very Good Plus for Side 2 with the record's audio being Excellent Minus. The vinyl retains its glossy factory lacquer but has some light surface hairlines and marks as well as scuffs from the original inner sleeve, which is in Near Mint condition and doesn't have any splits or tears. The yellow saturated labels are very clean and in Near Mint Minus condition, completely scuff- and wear-free, only having some very light spindle marks that could be seen under a strong light. The vinyl plays great with just some light occasional static / background noise which is more noticeable during the quieter parts and most likely could get reduced, or perhaps go away, if the record was professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine.
