Description

"The Hammer Song" b/w "Banks of Marble." Historic first record by the Weavers (Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, Ronnie Gilbert, Fred Hellerman). Recorded for People's Artists and issued in 1949 on Hootenanny 101. Limited edition release and quite scarce. This is the first recording of the famous "If I Had a Hammer." Condition is E. The Weavers would shortly afterward sign with Decca and be subjected to the over-arranged accompaniment of Gordon Jenkins on "Goodnight Irene," but this is the Weavers in their pure form, with just Seeger's banjo and Hellerman's guitar accompanying.
