Pete Townshend ha dichiarato che la band registrò praticamente tutte le canzoni che aveva scritto per The Who by Numbers, in parte a causa del blocco dello scrittore che stava attraversando all'epoca. Townshend aveva compiuto 30 anni nel maggio 1975 e iniziava a considerare l'idea di essere troppo vecchio ormai per suonare rock and roll e che la band stava perdendo la propria rilevanza dal punto di vista artistico.Egli cominciava a sentirsi disilluso dall'industria musicale, un sentimento che traspose nelle canzoni da lui composte.
