Thelonius Monk's iconic set of record LPs entitled "The Complete Riverside Recordings." This set is a comprehensive compilation of therecordings made by Thelonious Monk for Riverside Records between 21 July 1955 and 21 April 1961. It was released by Riverside in 1986 on 22 LPs.
This set has been called the mother of all Thelonious Monk collections. Its supremacy is only in part related to girth and presentation, however. Historians and critics are almost unanimous in appraising the years Monk spent with the then-fledgling Riverside Records as his best. This set catches is all, from the moments of deeply inspired, quicksilver genius to the foibles, miscues, and studio chatter (very minimal).
The boxed set was originally purchased by my mother, but as you can tell from the unopened shrink wrap, for some reason it was never opened or played. LPs don't get any better than this! The set is fairly heavy and will have to be carefully shipped.
