This handsome and quite rare LP from Vox / Polydor (PL 6450, US pressing, black/silver microgroove pressing, mono) features the great French violinist Jacques Thibaud in a highly atmospheric account of Chausson's Poème Op. 25, recorded at the Salle Pleyel, Paris, on 4 November 1947 with conductor Eugene Bigot directing the Lamoureux Orchestra.
Neither in sound nor performance is this a technically immaculate reading, but so characterful is the playing, with an authentically 'French-sounding' orchestra seconding the great violinist. Nearly everything this great violinist set his bow to was touched with distinction, and these remarkable recordings testify to his inimitable, unique artistry – this is a remarkable document of a great artist and a bygone era.
On the B Side we are offered Gaby Casadesus' equally magical rendition of Faure's Ballade for Piano and Orchestra Op. 19, with Manuel Rosenthal conducting the Lamoureux Orchestra, also set down at the Salle Pleyel, Paris, on 7 May 1948. Gaby Casadesus plays with haunting expressiveness, and this ranks as a superlative performance in every way.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket EXCELLENT. There is slight fading to the Mercury logo on the front panel, and minor edgewear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, and very striking in appearance – overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP is VERY GOOD++. Though the surfaces are not CD silent, in general the playback is excellent. There is light surface noise, but I believe most of this is attributable to the original 78rpm source and not the condition of this particular copy. This is an historical recording transferred from 78s before the age of "no-noise" re-mastering. On the plus side, one can argue that the transfer heard here, unfiltered and not overly manipulated as it is, offers much truer sound. Nonetheless, those requiring flawless or near-MINT surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.
