Easter Morning, 1969…Frank Zappa calls up Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band and tells them the album he is producing for them is done. The Captain instructs the band to dress in their Sunday best clothes before they all go to the studio and listen to the complete finished work for the first time. By all accounts, the experience tiptoed between celebratory and downright religious.

IIn full partnership with the Zappa Family Trust and to celebrate the relaunch of the seminal label imprint, Third Man Records is proud to announce its 36th Vault package focused squarely on Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band's Trout Mask Replica.

Out of print on vinyl for nearly ten years, this remaster was helmed by industry legend Bob Ludwig and cut by the estimable Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Utilizing crystalline-quality safety masters kept in the Zappa family vault for decades by the trustworthy Joe Travers, the audio here is positively glorious. Every last skronk breathes full life into the room. Every twisted guitar figure uncurls onto paths previously unpaved. Every last bark and howl shines resolute through the vast emptiness of your mind.

Previous countless Trout Mask Replica repressings used scans of scans of scans of the cover image, but for Vault Package #36 the original Cal Schenkel cover photo has been tracked down and reproduced here at its clearest — its resolution from the original release in 1969. If you’ve only ever seen a jpg online or fuzzy, smeared-looking CD issues from the 90’s, be prepared to be wowed by the fully engaging spectrum this iconic image casts. This 2xLP is pressed on heavyweight 180-gram fruitcake fish-scale colored vinyl for that full-on frenetic feeling.

The French-only 7-inch single of “Pachuco Cadaver” b/w “Wild Life” will also be included as part of this overreaching package. As the only single ever pulled from this admittedly dense album, this is the first time EVER that “Pachuco Cadaver” has been repressed and comes wonderfully housed in a replica glue-pocket picture sleeve and pressed on a white colored vinyl. ALL vinyl in this package is lovingly pressed at Third Man Pressing’s state-of-the-art plant in Detroit, Michigan for that extra-special attention to detail.

Additionally, Third Man Records has undertaken the creation of the first ever replica trout mask. Much in the spirit of the cardboard cutouts included in original copies of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s album, this mask will be a hit at Halloween parties and Duchampian celebrations for eons to come. If that’s not enough, Third Man has commissioned an impressive, striking fabric patch that reproduces the Trout Mask cover art, an insignia that will signify any wearer as a follower in the Captain’s army.

And if that’s not enough, the revered illustrator Jess Rotter of Rotter and Friends has run the Trout Mask cover through her inimitable style and cooked up an inspired line-drawing rendering that beautifully graces a sturdy, durable tote bag to hold all these wonderful sundries in.

Finally, as a testament to the inspiring life of Don Van Vliet, Third Man has lovingly printed Jack White’s epitaph for the man in glorious, psychedelic silkscreen broadside wonderment. Fitting in the LP jacket and fitting as a tribute, this evocative poem was originally published in March 2011 issue of MOJO Magazine.

While Trout Mask Replica kicks off the partnership with a bang, do be on the lookout for even more avant-garde and mind-bending works in the future coming from the Bizarre/Third Man unification. 1) Payment is due within 4 days of auction end. If payment not made, an unpaid item case will be filed with Ebay.

2) Feedback given once buyer gives feedback first. If intent on leaving negative feedback or not happy with item, please email me first to hopefully come to a resolution.

3)  Not all records pressed are entirely flat; there may be a slight rise and fall to them. For purposes of this auction, they are not warped. A warped record means it is totally unplayable. THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS GIVEN UNLESS THE RECORD SOLD FALLS INTO THIS CATEGORY, INCLUDING RETURN SHIPPING.

4) Before you bid on an item, consider shipping costs, handling time, and other shipping services. Review the item description carefully. If you have any questions about shipping or anything else, contact the seller beforehand, NOT AFTER THE SALE!
I suggest you ask for an invoice before purchasing. If you pay for an item and ask for a partial refund, I will deduct the ebay/paypal fees before the refund because that is money out of my pocket.

5) International Buyers: I mostly ship using Global Shipping Policy. Import duties, taxes, and charges are included in the price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check the auction to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding or buying.

6) International Buyers: If you can not interpret the rules of this auction due to a language barrier, you may want to have someone who understands English explain it to you. It's not my problem/responsibility if you don't understand. By bidding you are expressing to me you understand and are taking responsibility for your actions.

7)  Not paying for an item after you agree to buy it has negative consequences, explained in Ebay's Unpaid Item Policy.


8) I have no problem if you ask for a different shipping method not specified in the listing. Just be aware that I am not paying for the difference out of my own pocket.  Ask questions first and wait for the invoice before paying.


9) Combined shipping is no problem.  However, if you purchase multiple items and pay the shipping for all of them without requesting an invoice, THERE WILL BE NO SHIPPING REFUNDS, no matter what the $ amount.

11) Delivery confirmation will be supplied. Buyer is responsible for tracking package. If package listed as delivered and buyer never received it, contact your local Post Office. Also, seller is not responsible if item is delivered and buyer did not make arrangements to secure item (ex: away on business, vacation, etc.).

12) Sealed records may be shipped outside jacket to avoid seam splits. Ask immediately after purchase.

13) For purposes of this auction, records/sleeves graded "Near Mint" means there are minor imperfections (ex: minor corner dings, creases, splits, etc.), i.e. not a perfect copy. Also a "Brand New" item can still be removed from the packaging. It's brand new whether you or I open it.

14) New records are graded Still Sealed (ie unopened) or Near Mint (NM) by appearance.
      Used records are graded NM, EX, VG+, VG, and G for audio quality.

15) Unless noted, the picture of the item is the one for sale.


16) LP records are shipped in standard LP mailers and packed securely. 7" records may be shipped in mailers or envelopes and are secured. I sell as well as own records. Please don't ask to "ship securely, add extra bubble wrap, put it in a record mailer," etc. I understand. If for some reason you want extra secure packing (ie double boxing), it will cost extra. Wait for updated invoice before paying.

17) Finally, if a winning bidder:
Does not want it after it is paid for and demands their money refunded,
Mistakenly bid on or claims someone else did and does not want item (exception: bid retraction before auction end. If you can't figure out how to remedy situation, refer to eBay policies),
Is not able to redeem a gift card or coupon,
Claims they somehow received same item from an outside source, or
Purchased item in hand/pre-sale item and found it cheaper or from another source before it shipped to them from Ebay seller (if item is delayed beyond stated time of arrival, I have no problem offering a refund),
be advised, any ebay/paypal fees will be deducted from refund, unless auction lists "no refunds".
