Thomas L. Clear:  Augmented History of the Violin on Records (1920 - 1950).

Originally issued circa 1974 as a 3 record set in an edition of 250 copies. The success of this first edition was such that a further 150 copies were pressed. This second edition had a fourth record added to it. A copy of this 4 record second edition (issued circa 1976)  is offered in this listing.

The set is an anthology of rare and scarce violin music, almost all transfered from 78 rpm recordings. See label scans for the names of the violinists included, and the music they play. The set comes with the booklet of notes that was included with the original three records, plus an additional pamphlet of notes that covers the content of the fourth record.

In essence, with a few carefully considered exceptions, Tom allocated to each violinist he selected for inclusion in the set the equivalent of one 78 RPM side.  For each violinist, Tom provides his own short biography. The Augmented History of the Violin on Records ( 1920 - 1950) was issued in a strictly limited edition, and even though additional copies of individual records do exist, all of these are in the possession of the Clear Estate.  Tom intended to sell (or give away, if it was the right person or institution) 250 copies, and only 250 copies, and he stuck to his word implacably.  

Record:

Mint:  A brand new, SEALED record, never played

NM:  Near mint, an unsealed record that looks as good as new

EX :  Excellent, very minor surface marks, not audible on play 

VG+ :  light surface marks, mild surface noice, few sporadic tics up and there, but should sound fine overall

VG :  more consistent noice or defects, or light scratches, no skip 

Good :  Noisy, but plays through. I will only sell rare or unusual items in this condition

Sleeve :

NM :  close to new

EX: well preserved, minimal wear

VG+ :  well preserved cover, but sign of wear

VG :  more pronounced defects, discoloration, slight delamination, writing
