Description
Throwing Muses, Red Heaven, **Ltd edition double LP vinyl** Along with "Red Heaven", there is a solo album of Kristen Hersh live at Maxwell's Hoboken.
The album was the first release after Tanya Donnelly left the Muses and so vocally it sounds quite sparse, Bob Mould (!) guests on "Dio". The sound as a whole, although not as radio friendly as "Real Ramona", has a very commercial college rock vibe. The accessibility of the melodies variable. The lyrics are Hersh's trademark surrealist confessional, often it seems she's detailing quite abusive relationships.
The real prize here though is the solo live album - I imagine released as a marketing primer for "Hips And Makers" which came out the following year. This is a good retrospective of all Hersh's song writing up until that point, with material taken off just about every album that had been released. Some of the songs are re-fashioned so that they segue from one to the next and so it's an interesting listen as you see how malleable Hersh sees her music.
Original 4AD artwork, outer sleeve in excellent condition. Original inner sleeve with artwork and lyrics (handwritten David Narcizo!). The live album comes in a plain copper finish sleeve and has lots of thumbmarks on it (see the photo), but is otherwise in excellent condition. Both records play perfectly with no jumps or scratches.
