Description
This is the very first release on Sabre Records—catalog C-100—issued in 1960 by the Thunder Rocks, one of Detroit’s most popular regional rock & roll instrumental groups. Rather than signing to an established label, the band launched Sabre Records themselves, making “War Path” backed with “Restless” the record that introduced both the label and its signature sound. The success of this debut helped establish Sabre as an important independent Detroit label, later issuing records by groups such as the Low Rocks, Valiants, Egyptians, and Fred Farrah.
Musically, this is pure early-’60s Detroit instrumental rock—driving guitar leads, pounding saxophone, sharp snare accents, and the unmistakable energy that bridged late rock & roll, surf, and the instrumental sounds that would soon influence the Midwest garage-rock explosion. Long before the MC5 and the Stooges gave Detroit its hard-rock reputation, bands like the Thunder Rocks were laying the foundation in dance halls, television appearances, and regional radio across Michigan and the Great Lakes.
Condition: A strong VG+ record. Both sides retain excellent original gloss with only light sleeve scuffs and superficial handling marks. Labels are bright and clean with a small vintage grease-pencil inventory number. A very attractive copy that presents beautifully and plays well.
Collectors of Detroit rock & roll, instrumental rock, surf, garage, regional label releases, and Michigan music history know how difficult original Sabre singles can be to locate. This is not simply an obscure 45—it is the record that launched an entire independent label and remains an important piece of Detroit’s early rock & roll story.
