I NEED YOU/GOT LOVE
(LA GLORIA GSP087) (RELEASED 1967)
Legendary garage/freakbeat 45 from Wellingtonian legends, Tom Thumb. Initially released three outstanding singles on the ‘La Gloria’ label, of which ‘I Need You’ was their last on the label before signing to EMI and changing to a more ‘proggy’ direction. This single is one of the greatest NZ ‘double-siders’ in their legacy of 60’s Kiwi Rock – both A and B sides absolutely cook, and have been featured on numerous NZ 60’s Garage compilations. Their previous single of the Elevators cover (You’re Gonna Miss Me) is an absolute gem as well!!
‘I Need You’ is a raucous beat stomper, driven by a pulsating bass line and organ. Pretty cool guitar break mid song. Snotty, pleading vocals abound!
‘Got Love’ is the old Slim Harpo fave (Got Love If You Want It – a staple of many R&B/Garage bands), sped up, making it a mod/garage pounder that is exciting. Apparently this song was considered the A side by NZ radio, and was promptly banned by the NZ Broadcasting Corporation due to suggestive lyrics!!
Record = Visual – Strong VG / Play Grade – VG+ (A side)/ VG+ (B side)
NZ La Gloria pressing, with numerous small hairlines and markings. No ‘loud’ clicks whatsoever. Slight clicking on non-musical lead in groove at commencement of B side, and non-musical lead out rill at end of A side, but nothing untoward. Nice gloss. Another loud, thick NZ pressing of the era.
La Gloria textured labels in Very Good condition, some discolouration, and small spindle markings. Pencil line marking and name of ‘Chick Ratten’ written prominently on A side in pen. (Interestingly Chick Ratten was a successful NZ Olympic Cycling coach based in Wellington from the mid 60’s to the mid 80’s, before moving to Melbourne, Australia and running a renowned music/bar establishment, “The Rainbow Hotel” in Fitzroy which catered for Jazz/Blues/Roots Music…….I’m assuming that this record belonged to said person because of the unusual name, and that Tom Thumb were a local Wellington band!!)
Overall a record in very good condition and an enjoyable listen.
This record is now considered to be one in the top 5 of most sought after 60’s NZ Garage/Freakbeat releases as it rarely turns up (in any condition.)
