Description
Folkways FD-5581, “Music in the Streets” from 1957. This is one of the great Tony Schwartz collections of music recorded on location on the streets of 1950s Manhattan. The original heavy vinyl plays at about VG+ with some light background static and a few light pops. The super-heavy jacket with cardboard insert has light wear on the bottom seam and practically no wear on the others. Corners are basically square. The jacket has some age toning, but the cover graphics are still superb and the jacket is very clean. The LP is divided into four parts including Street Musicians, Washington Square, Religious Music, Street Festival, and Parades, with the bulk going to the first three categories. There is a cameo of Moondog playing on 52nd Street, another of the Rev. Gary Davis on 46th and Sixth Avenue, another of Giuseppi Ravita playing fiddle in front of Carnegie Hall, and another of a blind accordion player. At Washington Square we hear the Kossoy Sisters, Ralph Rinzler, Fred Gerlach and others. For the religious numbers, there are Salvation Army bands and gospel singers, and there are recordings of Fifth Avenue parades. The noise of the city in the mid-1950s provides the background to all. Simple as his concept was, Tony Schwartz was a genius. Additional LPs in a single package are $1.00 per LP domestic, $2.00 elsewhere. For overseas shipments, I strongly recommend registered mail for $12.00 extra. Many old records are now practically antiques and should be treated that way. This LP will be packaged with the record inside an inner sleeve but outside the jacket; both are placed inside a sealed outer sleeve and shipped inside a special oversized handcrafted mailer with padding on all sides. It is designed thick enough not to be caught in a postal conveyor belt and strong enough to withstand a drop from a second-story window with no damage to LP or jacket. More than two LPs may be mailed together in a heavy Bags Unlimited pizza-style box. Your LP should arrive in the same condition as on the day it was shipped. All used LPs are play-graded on a VPI turntable with Audioquest tonearm and Grado cartridge.
