More like an album of extended soundscapes than sound effects, this excellent and rare disc consists of carefully collaged field recordings bordering on organized sound/musique concrete and even suggesting the tape music of experimental composers like Luc Ferrari. Legendary sound archivist Schwartz recorded the entire album in New York City with an ear for the cinematic and an obvious love for documenting the noise emissions of his city; there are over 15 minutes of Street Traffic tracks alone (!), plus Street Drilling, Coal Delivery, Cocktail Party, Department Store Crowds, All Men's Bar At Lunchtime, Office Building Lobby, and more. The recordings were executed in what was then glorious audiophile quality, with some amazingly deep bass rumbles picked up from the mechanical sounds. This is a highly recommended artifact both as a trove of unique sounds and a slice of 1950s NYC urban life, rising way above run-of-the-mill generic "sound effects" records and of great use to DJs/turntablists/producers/musique concrete-ists.

New York-based field recordist, engineer, and sound designer Tony Schwartz released several documentary albums for Folkways and Columbia, recorded some of the earliest Moondog sessions, and produced radio shows demonstrating an appreciation of sound and visionary understanding of electronic media that endeared him to Marshall McLuhan, Edward Steichen, Ben Shahn, and Bill Moyers and placed him in the pantheon of 20th century aural innovators and magnetic tape pioneers alongside composers like John Cage, Pierre Schaeffer, Vladimir Ussachevsky, and Jim Fassett. Packing I pack professionally and with the utmost care drawn from years of experience trading vinyl internationally. I use new record mailers which I have determined are the best and most protective, reinforced with cardboard inserts and bubble wrap padding. All records are shipped with poly plastic sleeves and with the vinyl outside of the cover to prevent damage. All packages are completely sealed with strong packing tape covering all openings. Unless requested, no paper invoice is included in the package, both to save trees and to avoid customs difficulties. If you'd like your package done any differently, just let me know.
