We’re having a bit of a clearout of stuff at home so I’ve put my usual eBay sales of art and ephemera mostly to one side for a couple of weeks. I’ve got a large personal collection of vinyl, lots of which I don’t play any more, so one of the things we will be selling is records. Recently I’ve been listing a small number of reggae and ska records.
This is an original 1973 copy of this terrific Toots and the Maytals single issued on Dragon Records. It is not at all easy to find these days – it was not a big seller at the time. Rather surprisingly, the A-side was the band’s take on John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Roads. Funky Kingston, which was the title track on their then current album and probably remains the better known song, was relegated to the “B” side. The Funky Kingston album is widely regarded as one of the finest reggae albums of the period. The album, which was also on the Dragon label, was distributed in the UK by Island Records. On some copies of this single (like this one), the phrase “Manufactured and distributed by Island Records Ltd” has been blanked out and the phrase “Manufactured by Mooncrest Records Ltd” has been over-printed. I’ve no idea what that was about.
I bought this record new myself in 1973. It remains in very nice condition with just light surface marks to the playing surface. It plays very well on both sides with no clicks or crackles. As you can see from the images above the labels are in nice clean condition. The record comes in a plain white sleeve.
