Louie Louie was a track from the Maytals album Funky Kingston, first released in 1972 (the album was re-issued in 1975 with a number of the original tracks removed and replaced with new material). Louie Louie was one of only three tracks to be retained for the later release.
Louie Louie is of course, one of the most famous songs in the history of rock music. Originally written and recorded by R&B singer Richard Berry in the early 1950s, it is most well known in the garage rock version by the Kingsmen from the mid-1960s. It has been recorded or performed by musicians as diverse a Frank Zappa, Bruce Springsteen, the Kinks, the Beach Boys, Otis Redding and Iggy and the Stooges and Robert Plant. Incidentally, the label to this version misspells Richard Berry’s surname.
It’s particularly appropriate that a reggae band should make such an ace recording of Louie Louie, since the song – if it is about anything – is about a Jamaican sailor’s return home to the girl that he loves.
This record was of course, not a hit - and reggae was by no means as popular with the mainstream UK audience in 1972 as it later became. Original examples are therefore now hard to find. I have owned this copy from new (I also bought the Funky Kingston album, as I was a big fan of the Maytals at the time). This copy was played quite often back in the day I guess, but I can honestly say that it hadn’t been on a turntable for forty years before I tested it for this listing the other day.
It plays very nicely. It has lots of fine lines but mostly of the kind you get just from taking the record in and out of the sleeve. There is a little light crackling audible during the quiet passage in the first few seconds of the B-side but otherwise it has no problems. It has lovely, clean, bright labels and comes with its original sleeve, as you can see in the images above. The sleeve is also in very nice condition.
Also included with this listing is a copy of another Maytals single from 1972, Pomps and Pride. Pomps and Pride was also a track from Funky Kingston. This copy is in similarly decent condition to Louie Louie. It’s also another one that I have owned from new. I noticed when I tested I the other day that it has a slight warp. I can’t remember it it has always had that or not. It only affects the record for about the first third and only stretches over about a fifth of the circumference. The record does plays through OK on my turntable but you can see the arm rising and falling with the warp.
I have decided not to sell the record separately because, of course, it might not play so well on somebody else’s turntable. Warps on records are funny things and even a slight one like this can make a record completely unplayable if your turntable decides it doesn’t like it.
I therefore offer this single entirely as a free gift with Louie Louie. In other words, you are bidding only for the copy of Louie Louie. If the copy of Pomps and Pride does plays on your turntable, that’s a bonus. If it doesn’t, then just throw it away and you’ve lost nothing. If you look at it like that, you won’t be disappointed.
