Description

Up for sale is a rare, original promotional first pressing of Townes Van Zandt's legendary fifth studio album, High, Low and In Between, released on the iconic Poppy Records label in 1972.

Recorded at Larrabee Sound Studios in Los Angeles, this 1972 masterpiece marked a monumental sonic evolution for Townes Van Zandt. Moving away from the heavy string arrangements of his early records, these sessions introduced a raw, gospel-inflected country-rock sound. It boasts a brilliant lineup of top-tier session musicians, including the legendary Larry Carlton on steel guitar. The album houses some of Van Zandt's most enduring poetry, including "To Live Is To Fly" and "Highway Kind".
Founded by Kevin Eggers, Poppy Records prioritized uncompromising artistic freedom over commercial interests. Because Townes was primarily a cult figure during his lifetime, very few copies were ever manufactured. Original Poppy promotional pressings are incredibly scarce and highly sought after.

Vinyl Matrix Etching:This copy is verified as a historic first-edition promotional press struck directly from the original master tape lacquers:Side 1 Matrix: PYS-5700-1 (Denotes the absolute first master lacquer cut) Side 2 Matrix: PYS-5700-2 1 (etched)
Features the vibrant, vintage orange Poppy Records labels designating a true 1972 first press.
Promo Jacket FeaturesEmbossed Promo Stamp: This unique collector's piece features the authentic, official promotional copy embossed stamp cleanly struck into the upper right-hand corner on the backside of the jacket. Unlike standard commercial copies, this indicates it was distributed specifically to radio DJs or music critics prior to the album’s release, ensuring it was sourced from the earliest production batches.

Vinyl Grade: VG+ (Very Good Plus)Audio Performance: Plays beautifully! The analog fidelity is deep, warm, and bright across both sides. Note on Visual Condition: There is a visible light cosmetic scuff on Side 2 over tracks 5 and 6 ("Standin'" and "High, Low and In Between"). This has been thoroughly audio-tested and does not produce any surface noise, clicks, or pops. The album sounds amazing. note: I included a quick video with audio of the transition from track 5-6 on side two so you can hear/see the playback.

Jacket Condition: VG+. Features the original single jacket sleeve layout. The jacket shows some light, honest age, corner wear, and edge shelf wear as expected from a 50+ year old vintage sleeve.

Please see photos for condition and runout markings.
