Traffic – John Barleycorn Must Die - Island Records - Pink Island "i" Logo - 1970 Gatefold Card Sleeve

"John Barleycorn Must Die" was originally released in 1970.                

Island Records release no: ILPS 9116. Stereo.

This is an original UK Island Records "i" logo. The third of the Pink Island records logos.

For those who collect the earliest pressings the matrix numbers are  A2  B2 .

This is one of the early versions with no traffic logo on the label, apparently in error. From what I have read later pressings had the traffic logo added.

Thick quality vinyl.

I must say there is a fair amount of crackle on some tracks although the record looks very clean with no scratches.

I would class the sound as VG minus with one or two tracks G. It still plays very well with no clicks or jumps. 

The record label on side 2 has a small line mark. Not sure if it was in the original pressing or a mark from later. Please see the pictures.

The gatefold unlaminated cover is close to excellent condition with just some spine wear (please see the pictures).

The record is housed in the original sleeve. The sleeve has some internal discolouring at the edges. Please see the pictures.

The Record Grading

I have classed this using the Record Collector Grading as "Very Good minus" with some tracks as "Good"

This record is not brand new or in mint condition so if that is what you are after then to avoid any disappointment please refrain from bidding if you prefer mint condition.   

The reason for the grading. 

The record looks in great condition, nice and clean. No scratches. It is quite crackly on some tracks which is why I have graded this with a VG minus.

You can hear crackles in the quieter passages.

I use the Record Collector Magazine's Grading Guide as below.

2.  MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be     Mint.

3.  EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

4.  VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

5.  GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

6.  FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.

7.  POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

8.  BAD The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler.
