Tristram Cary - NARCISSUS

GALLIARD label 7” 33rpm with a most unusual laminated gatefold sleeve that measures 235mm x 200mm and contains a six page ‘Score’ for one Flute and two Tape Recorders along with further details to the inside of the
cover and housing the 7” 33rpm disc.

Both the sleeve and the disc are, at least, in excellent + condition and the record has no noticeable marks
or scratches and plays superbly. The running times are approx. 8 mins. each side.

TRISTRAM CARY
Sound pioneer and composer of incidental music for both Doctor Who, Quatermass series and the Ealing comedy film The Ladykillers; amongst others. (b.1925) was studying music whilst serving in the Navy as a radar specialist. After the war he combined his musical and technical knowledge to build the first electronic music studio in England. The record is dated 1970 although the score indicates that it was written in ‘68 . The disc is inscribed “A Sutton Sound Recording: 30th Jan 1970 - Engineer: Michael Hall”. The Flute is played by Douglas Whittaker and the Tape recorders by Tristram Cary.

I acquired this record some years ago and in 2006 decided to track down Mr Cary. An internet search revealed that he was living in Australia and, having managed to get his email address, I sent him my enquiry as to the history of this disc. His reply revealed the following:...........................................

“ That record was put out with the published score. Not available separately, so you have the complete package, except that to perform it you need to copy out a separate flute part and prepare a couple of special tapes. Narcissus has been quite a successful piece, with many performances around the world. Premiered at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in 1969, it was broadcast by the BBC in 1970, possibly repeated - I don’t know. It has been long out of print and I only have one copy left myself.............I appreciate that you probably want to hang on to it because it is quite rare. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then, and I am coming up to 81. Best wishes Tristram Cary.”
