Offered here is an original Black Swan label 78 rpm record c.1922 featuring blues singer Trixie-Smith singing "Desperate Blues" and "Trixies Blues",
The recordings on this record were also issued on the Paramount label #12161 in 1924.
This record grades a nice VG with much of the original luster present. Some light scuffs and a few light scratches, but still a nice surface. There is a long scratch on the Trixies Blues side that goes into the label, but it has very little impact on playback. See photo close-ups for details. It recorded very well for me.
The Black Swan label was created to offer black performers artistic freedom and access to recording studios that was pretty much denied to them by the major recording companies. Their marketing was primarily geared to black audiences, and their distribution was limited compared to the larger mainstream recording companies. They were only in business for a little over 2 years, 1921-1923, and when it closed, most of their library of recordings was acquired by and reissued on the Paramount label starting in 1924. As a result, Paramount exposed some of the greatest early blues singers and their works to more mainstream audiences and their popularity expanded. However, the original issue recordings on these Black Swan records are hard to find these days and most have been played to death.
