Description
For sale we have The Tubby Hayes Quintet's 'Down In The Village' from 1962 on the Fontana label, catalogue number 680 998 TL. This is possibly the best recording of Britain's greatest ever jazz instumentalist. This followed Tubby's booking the previous autumn at the Half Moon Club in New York. The quintet also included Jimmy Deuchar - Europe's foremost Jazz Trumpeter, along with Gorden Beck(Piano), Freddie Logan(Bass) - and Allan Ganley on Drums. After a brief spoken intro, the live recording kicks off with a furiously paced 'Johnny One Note' (Tubby on tenor on a rollercoaster of energy and power). The title track builds to an inevitable finale with great solos from Jimmy Deuchar and Gorden Beck. This is followed by the very attractive 'In The Night' with Tubby on Soprano.
The record is graded as very good condition. It has scuffs and scratches resulting in pops and clicks one would associate with a record that is almost 50 years old, however it plays fine all the way through with no jumps or distortion. The Garrod and Lofthouse laminated sleeve is also graded as very good condition. The top seam has a split approximately 2 inches long and there is slight discolouration to the rear. This doesnt really detract from the overall condition of the record and this album would make a fine addition to any discerning Jazz enthusiast's collection.
