This beautiful and very rare LP from Columbia Masterworks (ML 5179, US pressing, gray label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features extraordinary chamber music works by composers Stefan Wolpe and Alan Hovhaness – truly haunting and rarified masterpieces.

This album is among the more elusive of Columbia’s “Modern American Music Series” and, like the others, boasts a number of amazing artists, including the avant-garde pianist David Tudor, the Juilliard Quartet’s cellist Claus Adam, and the brilliant percussionist Elden Bailey.

All three performances were warmly recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York City, in June 1955.

Incidentally, the truly memorable cover photo was taken by Leo Stashin. There are extensive liner notes, as well as the original texts to Wolpe’s Ten Songs from the Hebrew, provided on the reverse side of the jacket and printed in English only.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is minor wear along the open edge of the jacket, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – an outstanding collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
