STILL FACTORY SEALED
THE TUNEFUL TROLLY
USA - RAINBOW CAPITOL - ST 110
Never opened - Never Played!!!
STILL FACTORY SEALED 1968 first pressing of a very collectible TEEN-SCENE high school group who 'wowed' executives at Capitol Records with their solid "Psych" sounds that contained elements of 1967 era Beatles and Beach Boys psychedelic inflected sunshine pop-perfection...
One of the rarest, little seen 60's rock Lp's on Capitol...
The Tuneful Trolley were a psych-pop sextet with a knack for writing and performing solid Beatlesque rock.
With a sizable following in their home base of Long Island, New York, The Tuneful Trolley released Island In The Sky in 1968 to national indifference, this despite containing all the elements of an instant smash. Island In The Sky is glorious sunshine pop-psych perfection, indeed, landscaped with fuzz guitars, oboes, melodic Beach Boys-esque , (Pet Sounds) harmonies, and garage pop sensibilities. All this from a band in their mid-teens! The lads wrote most of their material, and recorded their own tracks!
The "Trolley Theme" and "Written Charter" are strong highlights with heavy fuzz, the LP has a few abrupt tempo changes, so along with that and the lyrics this gets the psych label. The "Trolley Theme" and "Written Charter" are strong highlights with heavy fuzz, the LP has a few abrupt tempo changes, so along with that and the lyrics this gets the psych label.
Most of the material on Island in the Sky falls into the category of East Coast sunshine pop, which means the outlook is a bit cloudier and more attitudinal than similar West Coast product, and tunes like "Uncle Joe's Armada" and "M.A.C.K. (Mother's Authoritative Collection of Knowledge)" suggest the musical and lyrical influence of Sgt. Pepper's without the same level of skill or grand vision. "Lovely Day" and "Georgianna Peach Pie" are great pop-psych tunes that benefit from the muscular drumming of Jack Riolo, there's a folk rock undertow to "Apple Pie" that's clever and effective, and "The Tuneful Trolley Theme" is a better-than-expected bit of self-promotion. Island in the Sky sounds like the promising debut album from a group likely to do something even better once they had some more experience under their belts, and it's too bad the Tuneful Trolley's sophomore effort never happened, but for fans of '60s pop, there are a few hidden gems to be found on this long platter...
