Description
Haim Effendi was a Turkish Sephardic Jew who was born in Edirne in 1853. He died in Cairo in 1938 at age 85. Haim was one of the most popular Sephardic entertainers of his time. He recorded songs in Turkish, Judeo-Spanish (Ladino), Hebrew and Arabic. Although he was a popular performer from childhood, he became famous throughout the middle east when he started recording. Columbia Records had a studio in Istanbul, and he was promoted by Blumenthal Records, the largest phonograph and record dealer in Istanbul. Sephardic Jews especially were fans and he entertained everywhere that had a large Ladino speaking community. He was invited often to the Palace to entertain Sultan Abdul Hamid.
Here we have Columbia #32006 recorded in Istanbul around 1929-1930. This record is in average condition for its age, with scuffs and scratches, that do not affect play. There is very little graying in the grooves. Side 2 has a sticker on the label. I played both sides on my Victrola XVI. It plays well and sounds fine. There is some surface noise. For an electrical recording, it does not have as much volume as you would expect. Haim had a distinct voice. "Baham Diilla" and " Nidja Bir Hastreti" were popular Turkish songs with definite Sephardic Melodies. If you are into Turkish music of the 1920s, you certainly will enjoy this record.
