Two 1890s E Berliner 7" Records, Viva Il Vino FA Giannini, Killarney A Gladstone
- ITEM DETAILS: This lot comprises the two one sided Berliner records shown in the photos which date from the late 1890s. As you can see, the Killarney disc has a piece missing from its rim, but you can see where it has been played many times since this happened by where the needle has been placed repeatedly on the record just inside the inner edge of the damage. Both discs also have general wear and scratching as you can see, but although it's obviously sub-optimal it seems to be in keeping with the kind of wear found on most other surviving Berliner discs from this period. One nice thing is the discs are in what I assume is their original double-sided two-record sleeve, and although this has been written on various times over the years it's probably not something you see very often and adds nicely to their originality. Please be aware that I don't have a turntable and I've not been brave enough to play these on anyone else's modern equipment, but the grooves seem defined enough to get a tune out of (The grooves have picked up the camera flash so some of the photos may flatter their condition somewhat) but I obviously can't vouch for their sound quality. Basically everything is just as you see it in the photos, and if you have any questions please ask!
