Description
The very 1st press of UNICORN on the UK Zonophone label. Matrix 2/2 - very 1st cut. Stampers 1A/1R - placing it amongst the first couple of thousand copies ever pressed. Please note the labels are consistent with very earliest 1st press - they hold the 'Sold In The UK..' statement at the foot of the label. This statment was discontinued from label design only a few months after 1st release - -and is the de facto proof of earliest press for UNICORN. The vinyl comes houses in an original Ernest J Day gatefold cover. Also included is the original generic white Emi patents applied for inner sleeve from 1969. So, 100% genuine and 100% complete.
Vinyl (Ex+) Wow - this LP has only seen very light use. Under close inspection we could only make out a couple of light marks either side - nothing heavy or that will cause serious issue. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals an EXCELLENT+ level of playback with one slight deviation. With Rex, particularly their early work, you gonna need a top top condition pressing because their style is folk/whimsy - and any background will just ruin it. Thankfully, this copy is preserved to a very high level..one might even say an unusually high level. The audio is absolutely breathtaking...not sure if it's to do with the preservation levels, or the combination of preservation+early stampers, but either way it SOUNDS GREAT. You just can't imagine later copies and all that mass-produced two-for-one nonsense can produce audio like this! Interference is totally absent and you are just treated to very clean audio with fantastic clarity levels. All we could detect were a couple of crackles in a couple of isolated moments. And the deviation is a couple of light ticks toward the end of track 4. Other than that both sides play back like a dream.
Cover (Ex-) In fantastic condition and has been carefully looked after down the years. Lovely shiny front with only a couple of tiny thumbnail creases and a tiny amount of sticker residue bottom right corner. The rear is equally goo with only super-light handling. The interior follows suit with only light handling. Edge wear is light and the spine is really good with all text legible. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity.
Inner (Ex) Little ageing. No splits or markings.
