Mysterious self-styled musicologist and sample collagist U releases a follow up to the 80s post-punk inspired debut album Life Isn't A Fountain? that takes us into an entirely different direction. Here we have a collection of of ambient music and found sound that explores regional identity. All sonic elements compiled by U emanated from the region of Herefordshire region of Archenfield. With Archenfield being a fairly remote region, there is an overarching eerie, haunting, isolated feel to this thoroughly atmospheric album. The decision to keep the crackle of old recordings from certain samples helps with this haunted house feel. 'Sin Eater' fuses passages of dialogue with a gloomy, gothic abstract wall of sound. And there's a sense that all is not as it seems when the crow caw's during the outro to the spook-ambient 'Ariconium'. If it's an artist's job to see between the lines and find majesty and art in things people ordinarily overlook then U is doing their job. To have crafted this cohesive and moving album from such a vast array of sources is masterful. Hats off to them.
