From the outset, U2 went for the big message -- every song on their debut album Boy sounds huge, with oceans of processed guitars cascading around Bono's impassioned wail. It was an inspired combination of large, stadium-rock beats and post-punk textures. Without the Edge's echoed, ringing guitar, U2 would have sounded like a traditional hard rock band, since the rhythm section and Bono treat each song as an anthem. Of course, that's the charm of Boy: all of its emotions are on the surface, delivered with optimistic, youthful self-belief, yet the unusual, distinctive guitar textures give it an unexpected tension that makes it an exhilarating debut. The songs may occasionally show some weakness -- the driving "I Will Follow," the dark "An Cat Dubh," and the shimmering "The Ocean" stand out among the sonic textures -- yet the band's musical and lyrical vision keep Boy compelling until the finish.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were routinely distributed among the radio stations before the LP was released to the public, sometimes as much as 4 months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title.

Among the promotional releases, those that come with publicity kits (various packages comprising of photo inserts, letters of introduction from the label; typewritten biographies and/or discographies, decals, badges and alike) are generally recognized as the earliest, and most important specimens of a given title; with some  commanding astronomic prices on collectors’ market.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in its original, custom, inner sleeve, which is UNIQUE to this album [NOTE: there are two distinctly different versions of the inner sleeve found in this album: one with the black & white photo of the boy on one side (the same boy used for the front cover of U2's War album three years later) and  one with one side completely blank (without any graphics whatsoever) and with lyrics on the other side. This is the version with the boy's photo. We believe that the group's management deliberately withdrew the "boy" version in order to avoid any potential controversy.

(c)           The album comes with a rare promo-only 3-piece press kit (for details, see above)

(d)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)             Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NEAR MINT !

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.  (nothing significant)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)
