Mit You Are The Best Thing About Me hat die irische Rocklegende U2 bereits einen Vorgeschmack auf ihr neues Album gegeben. Nun veröffentlicht sie mit Songs of Experience ihr 14. Studioalbum.
Songs of Experience wurde bereits im Frühjahr 2017 in Dublin, New York und Los Angeles aufgenommen. Inspiriert wurde Frontmann Bono beim Schreiben der Songs vom Ratschlag des Dichters und Autors Brendan Kennelly: „Schreibe, als wärst du tot“. Das Ergebnis ist eine Sammlung von Songs, die eigentlich intime Briefe an Menschen sind, die dem Sänger sehr am Herzen liegen. Dazu gehören Familie, Freunde, Fans und auch er selbst.
Das Album wurde von Jacknife Lee (bekannt für seine Zusammenarbeit mit u.a. U2, R.E.M, The Killers & Taylor Swift) und Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic) sowie dem Grammy-gekrönten Steve Lillywhite, Andy Barlow und Jolyon Thomas produziert. Das Coverbild stammt vom niederländischen Fotographen Anton Corbijn und zeigt die Kinder von Sänger Bono und dem Gitarristen „The Edge“.
Songs of Experience ergänzt den Vorgänger Songs of Innocence aus dem Jahre 2014. Die Titel beider Alben sind angelehnt an die Gedichtsammlung „Songs of Innocence and Experience“ des englischen Dichters, Poeten und Mystikers William Blake aus dem 18. Jahrhundert.
Mit 13 neuen Songs wird das Album als Standard und Deluxe CD sowie auf Doppelvinyl und digital veröffentlicht.
