Made as an experimental side project for the band, it was seen as quite a departure from their regular sound and as such, Island records were reluctant to release it as a U2 album. So U2 and Eno therefore came up with the pseudonym of Passengers, and the album is certainly a more experimental, instrumental, soundtrack-ish affair than you might expect from a bunch of Irish rockers. The theme of the album was creating soundtracks to imaginary movies. Some songs did eventually make it to the soundtracks of real films: Heat, Miss Sarajevo and Ghost In The Shell to name a few.
The record has some light marks, but it plays fine with minimum of background distraction. Cover and insert are excellent.
Brian Eno – strategies, sequences, mixing, voices / Bono – vocals, guitar,piano / Adam Clayton – bass, narration / The Edge – guitar, vocals / Larry Mullen, Jr. – drums.
Plus: Luciano Pavarotti – vocals on 'Miss Sarajevo' / Holi – vocals / Howie B. – mixing etc / Craig Armstrong, Paul Barrett – string arr. / Des Broadbent – sequencer / David Herbert – sax on 2 tracks / Holger Zschenderlin – synthhesizer.
