This is Ian Anderson and his first album. He's all about the blues, the real blues, and the album was released at the right time when the British blues revival was cresting. Ian Anderson was backed by a couple of guys, the three piece opened eyes when playing their set within the London club circuit. These were the days when the blues-scene competition was fierce with the likes of name bands looking for gigs. Ian Anderson's band, though impressive, was out gunned by the likes of Mayall's Blues Breakers, The Groundhogs, Savoy Brown, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, etc, and not to forget Sam Apple Pie , Black Cat Bones, Chicken Shack, and on & on...
Here's the "fan-man" to tell you all about Ian Anderson in 1969.
Ian Anderson's FIRST Lp was recorded in what many believe to be the glory days of analogue, ‘Stereo Death Breakdown’ remains a fantastic piece of rootsy-blues in the pure sense, and leaves one good audio pleasure.
Anderson had been coaxed into the Blues scene by some early Muddy Waters vinyl, some inspirational live work by Spider John Koerner and the bottleneck guitar playing of Mississippi Fred McDowell. He’d spent the ‘summer of love’ buried deep in dusty old 78s from the 1920s and 30s absorbing the music of Charley Patton, Sleepy John Estes, Son House and the like.
Consequently, his own music was out of step with the technicolour, Psych-Blues sounds that had invaded the mainstream by 1968. Anderson was more about the authenticity, not just in details of sound and style but in that lonesome, bluesy feel too. He muses, some 50 years later that it is hard to fathom why a he as a teenager from Weston-Super-Mare should head down this path, although there was a slightly more retro scene emerging. Championed in the music papers and underground rock radio, by the likes of John Peel and Melody Maker publishing where all British music was displayed including adverts who was playing where and back pages for the public requesting instruments or bands, (even famous ones) requesting players. ,
Ian Anderson jumped into the competition and his blues sounds "Country Blues" nodding to the 20's & 30's blues roots. Ian was accomplished guitarist playing slide, and finger picking but understanding he needed to flesh out his style so he added bass and harmonica players to his line up (Bob Rowe and Chris Turner), it naturally offered a name for his new-found band as well.
The "Stereo Death Breakdown" album sessions were completed in five hours with the basic Ian Anderson’s Country Blues Band three-piece set up; also playing were Bob Hall on keys and other members of the Panama Limited Jug Band.The spontaneity and spirit of love and devotion to this particular style of Ian Anderson's blues comes bursting out of the speakers. These were apparently mostly first takes which do ring true, there’s an ownership to the playing, they really got a hold of these tracks. The track list covers a high percentage of Ian Anderson originals alongside some equally well selected traditional arrangements such as ‘Break ‘Em On Down’ (a tune that Led Zeppelin were soon to pounce upon) and a brave attempt at reverting ‘That’s Alright’ back from Elvis’s rocking treatment into something more akin to its original form. Anderson’s own songs all honor their blues-roots in an honest, unpretentious way. Old blues songs from the early twentieth century had a curious obsession with their big legged women, but Anderson bought a quirky little twist to this type of lament with ‘Short Haired Woman Blues’. The tune firmly establishes that he does not want a woman whose hair is shorter than his own. You can allow yourself a little chuckle at this, some things age better than others!

There are no delete marks, no split seams, no bends, and no writing ...
- The vinyl: Rated: near "EX" (excellent) plays M- audio. Weight-heavy vinyl with some very fine-light hair scuffs that are not deep as in scratches (no), so plays delightful! Both UK aqua Liberty labels are clean
