UK DECCA SXL 2002 WBGv Ed1 Curzon Beethoven Piano Concerto 5

This is one of a number of vinyl records from the 1950’s & 60’s listed this week which we no longer listen to. Little played, the records are still in very good condition, the covers sometimes less so.

Gradings are based on the “Record Collector Magazine's Guide” set out in the eBay Guides together with notes about condition added. Extracts from the Gramophone Magazine review written at the time of the record’s release are included where these are available.

 
RECORD GRADING

VERY GOOD

SIDE 1: A clean, bright surface with some light hairlines and spindle marks on the labels. The side does play very well, almost excellently but there are two noticeable hairlines which do produce repetitive ticks; about 8 light ones after 11 minutes but from 13 minutes to 16 minutes the line does produce continuous, repetitive ticks which are noticeable. Thereafter it again plays excellently.

SIDE 2: is also bright and clean with some, but fewer, light hairlines and a similar number of spindle marks on the label. I did not hear any unwanted sounds throughout this side. It really does play excellently.

I have to grade this record as only Very Good on account of the stretch of repetitive ticks on side 1 but, this apart it is an excellent disc to listen to of a truly memorable performance.

COVER GRADING

GOOD

The cover is the original ‘Blue Back’ dated August 1958. Both facings are clean and without damage but the top binding at the rear has suffered and, as can be seen in the photograph, the right side of this edging has been torn away, and there is a short split at the top right corner. There is also a little loss of the laminate at the rear.

The Inner is the original Blue FFSS which clean, undamaged and without creasing; just a little light discolouration at the opening edges
