Originally released in 1998, Occupational Hazard marked the fourth full-length from legendary New York City noise-rock trio Unsane. Following on from 1995's Scattered, Smothered & Covered, this album was the second to feature drummer Vincent Signorelli (Swans, Foetus) who would stay with the band until 2019. Renowned for its uncompromising abrasion, the material delivers sledgehammer grooves that smash, grind and churn at an overwhelming pace, falling somewhere between the lofty heights of post-hardcore experimentation and hideous sludge metal heft. Visceral, vicious and vehemently pissed off, sole original member Chris Spencer's approach was to craft truly ugly music regardless of any label of "punk", "metal", or "industrial," with the prioritisation focused squarely on caustic atmospherics and cutthroat nihilism, both of which are explored in spades on this late 90s cult classic.
