Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 123 grams. A very good average weight.

Rarity: Moderate, but far harder with a clean cover, inner and hardly played record.

Brief Info: Fourth album and their first to feature cover artwork by Roger Dean. A band scorned by the critics of the day but their albums proved popular within the progressive rock field and this is arguably their best album. Whether the gorgeous cover attracted attention or not, this was their breakthrough album and it sold well. A lovely sleeve in super condition and a well produced record. Quality songs with catchy melodies all performed brilliantly, quite why those critics picked on them so harshly remains a mystery to me. This is a terrific first issue with the Island credits and number and the deep large punched EMI matrixes, most collectors and fans will enjoy this.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold with matt smooth surfaces, this includes the lyric inner and superb artwork by Roger Dean. It was printed and made in England by Tinsley Robor and includes the Island i distribution credits.

Cover Front: A few quite minor blemishes and never an easy cover to find this clean. It retains rich deep colour with barely any rubbing – a tiny trace on the edges and corner tips is hard to avoid. A light thumb semi-crease and a very fine surface crease near the top right corner. Also a moderate crease on the spine edge near the centre, but little detracts from a clean and attractive piece of Dean art.

Cover Back: Any rub traces are tiny, few and faint. Again a central but quite fine spine crease. The lack of general creasing and especially ring wear is a considerable bonus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Very light and faint rub traces but few will better this inside.

Top Edges: Superb, straight and barely any wear apart from two or three tiny surface chips.

Bottom Edges: Very light patchy rubbing, a little more towards the right.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both in super condition. The front edge is close with a real edge that is tucked under, this has minimal traces of rubbing on the actual edge itself. The open back is clean, sharp with barely any burring or thickening, this is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: The centre of the spine has a smallish rub and crease, that apart little else to really fault. Quite solid, but the crease has made a small impact on it’s robustness. Still straight, uncompressed and folded square, so the edges meet up perfectly together for maximum neatness for the more discerning. As said, it has a smallish rub on the top fold near the centre but hardly anything else. Thus all the text is present and unworn as it most of the graphic itself.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs but all retain fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this highly wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This highly attractive Roger Dean cover should please many collectors, but not for the more discerning as it does have a few – albeit, mostly light visual blemishes.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: and in real terms even harder to find in top conditions being very prone to ringwear, friction rubs and especially edge splits. Double sided, unlined and including lyrics. This one has very deep colour and no ringwear or creasing, the only blemish were two small central movement edge splits that I have repaired to stop them widening. These quite small parts have whitened. Original and including the ILPS 9193 number, these are not seen a great deal better easily, they were never lined.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with only modest plays on the evidence and offers very fine, clean sound. Any surface marks are very light and faint as seen under angled light, there are NO penetrating scratches. Visually a lovely, first issue record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This excellent progressive record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. This has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound and a lovely clear production. These always sound at their best from a first EMI -1U matrix pressing. No pops or clicks were noted and this is a very clean pressed disc. Few copies will outperform this ISLP pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when grading this wonderful record and was nice to hear again after some time. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
