FINAL ALBUM for doomed front man David Byron, aman who would end up in the gutter of rock 'n' roll swigging from a vodka bottle and ranting about the old days when he used to be someone. Sadly The Heep were on a flight to nowehere at this point despite the recent recruitment of bassist John Wetton, an elder statesman of the British prog rock scene including stints with King Crimson and Family when it really mattered.
I saw the band promote this album at the giant Wembley arena (then called Wembley Empire Pool) and it was clear that Byron was on his last legs as a front man of note - the performance was listless and supremely dull despite a valiant effort from the rest of the crew including the irrepressible Mick Box.
'High And Mighty' moves in familiar Heep territory but the attack and focuss is a little diffused. At the time I thought this album was somewhat disapointing and didn't play it for many years. Recently I went back to it and was pleasantly surprised! The feel is very Heep with big swirling Hammond from Ken Leslie, opps I mean Hensley, and chomping fat wah-wah guitar from the fingers of Mick Box who never once gave up on the band like many other members had done. Wetton's contributions are more prominant than I remeber including some lead vocal spots and pulsating heavy bass work. The songs are pretty catchy too with 'One Way Or Another', 'Misty Eyes', and 'Can't Keep A Good Band Down' leaving a good if not great impression.
Slightly more commercial than previous efforts which is actually a very good thing indeed.
Tough to score this album in anywhere near decent shape.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.

Vinyl: Super clean and shiny condition - I would say played no more than a couple of times. Playback is awesome. Two faint spindle marks on labels but no other signs of any use whatsoever. Grades as shop fresh MINT-!
Cover: No signs of use. Issued in a beautifully illustrated cover. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Spine is straight, stiff and square. Grades as shop fresh MINT!
